The person the Narcissist portrays to everyone else is often the opposite of who they really are. They make it very hard for victims to speak out about the abuse they suffer behind closed doors. Many victims suffer in silence because they have such a hard time proving the abuse they receive.

To them, everybody else is the problem, and so they shift the blame onto others. At times you might hear the odd fake apology, which will be said for a reaction to benefit themselves. If a victim starts to break away from their abuser, the Narcissist will try to hoover the victim back in. They will do this by giving the victim a false apology and will promise to go and get help. Gaslighting is one of the most common techniques and forms of manipulation used by Narcissists. Gaslighting is when a person tries to convince somebody else the victim that they are wrong about something, when in fact they are not.

A Narcissist will use this tactic to brainwash their victims. Over time it causes the victim to question their own sanity and what is reality. They will start to lose their own identity. They go round in circles and never get closure on a topic.

The abuser will often leave the victim for short or long periods of time. This makes a victim accept any behaviour they receive; in the hope, the abuser comes back to them.

A Narcissist will never respect a boundary. When you first meet a Narcissist, they will see how far they can push your boundaries to determine if you are a potential victim. A Narcissist will look for your vulnerabilities, which is why they will want to know everything about you as quickly as possible.

They will find out how much you are prepared to take and how much they can push you into accepting their behaviour. A vulnerable person is easier to control and manipulate than someone who has very strong boundaries in place. Being involved with a Narcissist is extremely damaging to your mental and physical health.

If you notice someone having a negative impact on your life, this is a red flag and should not be ignored. No matter how much you want to save them you will only be destroyed in the process. An abuser will at first portray themselves as a very loving, understanding and overall, a nice person. This is who the victim falls in love with.

When the abuser knows that their victim is starting to fall for them they start to push their boundaries and see how much they can control and manipulate them. The victim by this point has fallen in love with their abuser and will do whatever it takes to make them happy. If a victim ignores the red flags and allows them to discard their boundaries the abuser will now start to control and manipulate their life. In many cases, victims will not want to admit they are in a controlling relationship and coming to terms with the fact that the person they have given everything to is actually the person that is abusing them can be extremely hard.

By the time a victim does come to admit they are in a destructive, controlling relationship it might be so far down the line where getting out sometimes seems impossible as they have invested so much time and emotional feelings into it. I recommend having healthy boundaries in place and not sharing too much personal information so quickly.

Shame, fear of losing the partner, and failure to recognise an abusive relationship were reported as the main barriers to leaving an abusive relationship.

Reach out for support from family and friends, as victims of abuse you need the validation and clarification that you are doing the right thing and to have that added support is a bonus as abusers tend to manipulate you back into the relationship by promising change which never happens. Therapy with a trained specialist in this area can help the victim process the trauma they have been through and guide them into believing in themselves again while rebuilding their identity.

Recognizing the areas they need to help is the most crucial part as admitting where you feel vulnerable makes you more aware of what you need to work on.

Hey, this is Arthur. I just wanted to give you a call to let you know that I called my parents to tell them about you. They are so happy that we are moving in with them as a new love couple in their basement — and that you are my first girlfriend!

They say girlfriend, but I say fiancé. But anyway, my mum ordered special towels for us — with matching bathrobes — with our initials embroidered on them. I just called because I needed your middle initial. I went through your purse last night while you were on the toilet, but none of the cards in your wallet had your middle initial on it.

Anyway, I can only talk for a minute, because now I have to call back the sculptor I hired to add your nude portrait in our granite fireplace. Why are people sometimes too clingy in relationships? It has a lot to do with how the person feels about themselves. In general, stickiness and uncertainty go hand in hand. A non-claimant man does not bow to the opinion of others. He does not seek approval, but does things for the pleasure of doing it.

Claim is a feeling that indicates a man who has no backbone. A claimant man is worried she will turn you down … and is looking for her approval. Stop that and love yourself from now on.

Otherwise, no one else will. An example of a strong, vulnerable man is someone who stands up straight and looks straight ahead, looks people in the eye when talking to them, always says what he thinks, and has no problem with other people who disagree with him. You get rejected a lot in the dating world. That is normal and it should be.

Rejections are the things that help you identify the inconspicuous women as quickly as possible and move on. Now is the time for some practical advice. There is nothing that can own anything. Never mind that you can own a person. We can continue to do so. And at the same time we always feel the freedom and unconditional love.

What intimacy! What a freedom! No desire to own each other. Very simple and extremely expensive! And yet you manage to feel that true love. On your luck! Thanks for reading these articles. My intention is to make happiness as simple and clear as posssible. By the way, excuse my English.

I am not a native English speaker since I live in Amsterdam. Much appreciated if you use the comments to make suggestions on my grammar. See ya in another blogpost! Tags: comebacks , confidence , people pleasing. Your email address will not be published.

Controlling behavior can come from just about anyone in your life. It could be your boss, a family member, a friend, or even your partner. Controlling people are all around. We most commonly hear about controlling husbands and controlling relationships. Although controlling behavior can feel extra traumatic in romantic relationships, any person in your life can control you in a harmful way.

And they can be a man or a woman. It is a mark of courage to recognize the signs of controlling behavior and controlling people. The controlling person targets an individual and dominates them in an unhealthy, self-serving manner.

Being manipulated, used, or controlled by another person can lead to a number of harmful effects. Remember it is not at all your fault.

Controlling people tend to prey on the kindest folks they can find. Remember to be cautious when you see even small signs of controlling behavior. If it happened once, it was probably for a reason, and the person will probably want to use you again. When these more subtle signs become constant, and repetitive, or form a pattern, then it is high time to take action — either by speaking up , setting boundaries , distancing yourself through techniques like grey rocking , or exiting the relationship.

There are various reasons why some people try to control others, and sometimes these are difficult to figure out. None of these have to do with you, the victim of inappropriate control. But if you want to preserve a relationship with a controlling person, consider whether they might be able to work on any of the above influences.

Some controlling behaviors can be recognized easily while others take time to manifest. Often, the person being controlled will turn a blind eye or not acknowledge controlling behaviors.

But in the case of physical abuse, the control may have started without your realizing it — as the other person just crossing a number of subtle fine lines. Getting beaten up is not the only form of physical abuse, even though it is the most common. Physical control can also look like restrictions on travel, the clothes you wear, or who you see.

Eventually you find yourself physically isolated and in fear of violence should you decide to meet up with a friend or just go for a walk. These are examples of controlling behavior using physical abuse — or even just the threat of it — as a weapon.

Controlling husbands, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, and partners can all be physically controlling and abusive. Both men and women can commit this behavior. First, a controlling person may find ways to cut off your autonomy so you become financially dependent on them; they might ask you to change jobs or even leave work. This ensures that everything you do with a financial implication, goes through them.

The second, alternative manifestation is equally restrictive. In both situations, it can become almost impossible for you to leave the relationship due to the financial burdens in your name. Not all these signs will clearly mean that someone is trying to control you. Controlling behavior exists on a spectrum, from unconscious or accidental control, to full-blown, intentional abuse.

There might be just one of the signs above, or other signs not mentioned. So the best way to move forward is to trust your gut.
